Learn from Thy Neighbor: Do Voters Associate Corruption with Political Parties? Talk by Professor Arieda Muco
I document that information disclosure about a corrupt local politician causes electoral spillovers on the party across types of elections and jurisdictions. Using data on radio antenna location and coverage, I identify jurisdictions that belong to the same media market. Using Machine Learning and Text Analysis, I rank municipalities according to their levels of corruption and show that electoral spillovers: i) increase when revealed corruption is higher, and ii) are larger than the direct effect. The findings, consistent with electoral accountability, are relevant to understand why parties might have incentives to improve selection of their politicians.
See you there!
